"To Live & Die in L.A." is an easy-rolling celebration of community. There is some respite from belligerence on the new album. After that, Shakur fell into Death Row's nihilist aesthetic headfirst. There were contradictions in his earlier recordings, most notably in the affirmation of "Dear Mama" and "Hold Your Head Up," but such contradictions disappeared once Knight got him out on bail pending appeal and brought him to Death Row. "If it's real, then let somebody else represent it, because I'm tired of it. "To me it's dead," Shakur told The Washington Post. When Shakur was in prison last year for sexual abuse, he seemed to be rethinking his "Thug Life" philosophy.

crossed Death Row, what a dumb move, now who you gonna run to?" The track itself is little more than a whining sex rap full of bedroom bravado, hardly surprising since it enlists the aid of R&B lovermen Aaron Hall, KC and JoJo Hailey of Jodeci. On "Toss It Up," Shakur notes it's "no longer Dre Day, arrivederci. Dre, who was added to the enemies list after he abandoned Death Row to start his own label, in part to get away from Death Row CEO Marion "Suge" Knight and his single-minded "gangsta rap" mentality. But the heartfelt rage and aggression and Shakur's fate - he was gunned down two months ago at the age of 25 - suggest this music is dead serious. It would be easy to dismiss all this as rapper braggadoccio. And even when it simply simmers, as on the gangsta-funk groove of "Hail Mary," it still offers a paean to revenge. Shakur's voice sounds like blood boiling at times. In fact, the first track, "Bomb First (My Second Reply)," is nothing more than another savage salvo aimed at his rivals: East Coast rappers in general ("roaches who don't deserve to breathe") and the competing Bad Boy label, its artists and executives. The original Machiavelli developed a subtle theory about political power and "the art of war." As Makaveli, Shakur leans toward brutal scenarios that end in gunfire. Shakur may well have envisioned some sort of resurrection or transformation - the liner notes end with "Exit - 2Pac, Enter - Makaveli." "Killuminati," released by Death Row/Interscope, is not billed as the work of "2Pac" but that of "Makaveli," reflecting the rapper's fascination with Renaissance political philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli. Still, his charisma and his fate will likely put this album at the top of the charts next week. The cover features a naked Shakur nailed to a cross, "crucified for keepin' it real." But despite various efforts by Shakur to fashion a new identity for himself, there's really not much difference between the old Shakur and this brief reincarnation. Though he didn't plan it, Tupac Shakur reaches out from his grave with the posthumous "Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory."
