It can be tailored for specific architectures and for several usage scenarios using a family of simple commands (that is, without the need of manually editing its source code before compilation) privileged users can also fine-tune kernel parameters at runtime.

Linux is deployed on a wide variety of computing systems, such as embedded devices, mobile devices (including its use in the Android operating system), personal computers, servers, mainframes, and supercomputers. However, there is a controversy surrounding the naming of such systems some people, including Richard Stallman, argue calling such systems "Linux" is erroneous because the operating system is actually mostly GNU, with the Linux kernel being one component added later on in 1992, nine years after the initiation of the GNU project in 1983, hence the name "GNU+Linux" or "GNU/Linux" should be used instead. Since the late 1990s, it has been included as part of a large number of operating system distributions, many of which are commonly also called Linux. Linux is provided under the GNU General Public License version 2 only, but it contains files under other compatible licenses. It was originally authored in 1991 by Linus Torvalds for his i386-based PC, and it was soon adopted as the kernel for the GNU operating system, which was written to be a free (libre) replacement for UNIX. The Linux kernel is a free and open-source, monolithic, modular, multitasking, Unix-like operating system kernel. The binary blobs in Linux are proprietary. gitĬ (most in C89, switch to C11 planned) , org /pub /scm /linux /kernel /git /torvalds /linux.
The HP G7 AMD based 1328dx still has those slower than expected random read and write times.

As to all the other suggestions, some will run on our laptops, some won't I've tried all that was suggested other than attempting to install Intel's RST on our HP AMD-based G7-1328dx laptop. That they same model as our G6 Intel based 1328dx HP laptop with the Samsung 840 SSD that is running right where it is supposed to. So, is the AMD Sata AHCI controller simply that much (30-60%) slower than the Intel Sata AHCI Controller, or is there something we can do to bring those SSD random read and write times up to the expected level on the HP AMD-based G7 laptop.

I've applied the latest AMD driver update (2015) but that showed little or no improvement. The difference in performance is narrowed down to be likely to be the AMD Sata Controller. That laptop's Samsung 850 SSD has significantly slower random reads and writes than the 840 Samsung SSD in the older G6 HP laptop. It has an AMD processor, an AMD chipset, AMD graphics, and an AMD Sata Controller. My problem is that our second, newer HP laptop is an AMD based computer. The Intel RST works fine on that Intel based HP Laptop. I have that on another HP Laptop with an Intel Processor and with another Samsung 840 SSD. one of the suggestions was to download and install the Intel RST tool, driver, or whatever. Thank you for the reply and for the suggestions.
